Guide to i3wmΒΆ

Unlike the other tiling window managers covered in this chapter, i3wm is not directly user extensible. If you want to add features to it, you need to hack the source code. When you consider the tiling window managers that specifically work this way, i3wm is among the most popular.

For this reason it was chosen as the base system for explaining core concepts.

Leaving aside the goals of this chapter, if you’re already a programmer or simply want a tiling window manager without much hassle, i3wm earns a hearty recommendation. It’s easy to set up and fairly intuitive to use. Its only major bad mark is that it’s not as extensible as awesome, XMonad or QTile, which is fine if you’re not interested in that feature.
